Landowner’s Home

Set Designer / Assistant Art Director

Pachinko is a multi-generational story of the struggles of Korean families, having to adapt to new cultural dynamics throughout time. The landowner’s home is that of a strong Korean woman who is fighting to keep her home and land against the offers of big money and large Japanese & American banks. By keeping her land she is standing up for her culture, heritage and her rights as a Korean elder. The landowner’s home set is small and quaint, with quirky personality and is a loved home in need of a little repair. We wanted it to show Korean architectural elements, with a tatami mat room off of the kitchen, sliding doorways and low kitchen counters. In addition, traditional kitchen appliances and accessories were imported in from Korea.

Renderings

Our production designer, Mara LePere-Schoolp, wanted this home to incorporate many mismatched textures and finishings as she had seen when scouting small homes in Korea. We also added in some traditional wood trim work to the walls, and makeshift shelving outside the window to make it feel more authentic.

Drawings

The layout was based on an exterior location in Korea we were tying into. Therefore, the location of hallway door and front window were fixed. The rest was left to our imagination.
