Pachinko - Busan Fish Market

Set Designer / Assistant Art Director

Pachinko traverses through multiple countries in its storytelling, and one of the most pivotal sets is the Fish market in Busan, South Korea. This market is where the story of romance develops between Sunja and Hansu, as well as where Sunja grows up and is moulded into the woman she is. We wanted the market to feel culturally authentic, with lines of traditional stalls and shops. We also built in some offices for Hansu, a rice shop, and some exterior stalls. The design was simple it was the layout and flow of the market that took some planning. We also built some tunnels through an existing museum and a ferry station in the building next door to be able shoot scenes back to back while on location. The market was a very large set with lots of moving pieces, for each scene we had a specific dressing plan and boat plan, to reflect a progression of time throughout the years.

Renderings

We created a quick model in Revit of the location where we would build our market. From there, we added in offices and shops, and made sure it all integrated naturally together in the space. These renderings were mainly space models to show where things would go and sight lines.

Pixeloid

Pixeloid studios did an incredible job creating these illustrations of what we wanted our fish market to be. These were super helpful to display the tone, fullness and atmosphere to all departments while we were prepping this massive task.

Britannia Shipyards - Location Model

When we first began imagining the market we were going to have an entire exterior market street as well. In order to do that we were going to build façades over the existing buildings at Britannia Shipyards. I did a site measure and modelled up the entire exterior as it is today. This is displayed in the renderings below. We never ended up building the exterior market, yet this site model was a very fun one to create and may be used in future studies. Next to the renderings are site photos for comparison.

Pixeloid

Pixeloid studios also created these illustrations of what our exterior fish market could be, based off my model (renderings seen below illustrations) and some reference images. It would have been amazing to design this market section as well, yet just playing around with the designs is also entertaining..

Drawings

Drawing the fish market set was a large feat, and I had some set designers helping me with all the details. I was mainly in charge of logistical drawings, interior stalls / shops and the tunnel systems. We were constantly doing placement plans for boats, set dressing through different years and visual effects additions.
