Tokyo Bank

Set Designer / Assistant Art Director

The storyline of Pachinko spans many decades and countries, and one of the major timelines is held in 1980’s Tokyo, Japan. Within this storyline, Soloman moves from New York city to Tokyo to climb his way up the real estate banking ladder. Our Tokyo Bank set is designed to reflect the orderly and refined way in which Tokyo runs its businesses in comparison to the North American hustle. It was inspired by clean lines, distinct shapes, peek-a-boo views and an open air feel. We wanted to draw out a nature inspired zen feeling and create balance and connection in a high stress environment. We did so using wood detailing, built in landscaping and water features. In addition, we designed the bank so that every line is aligned with another, this creates visual cues that draw you through the space seamlessly. A main focal point when you appear from the elevator are the triangular doorways. These doorways pull you through the lobby, past the hallways and into the bullpen, and all of these spaces are tied together by aligned ceiling details. Along this path you will get glimpses into other areas such as the conference room, hallway seating nooks, and offices. The angled exposed aggregate concrete walls and glass exterior curtain wall add a modern twist on the 1980’s interior, showing that the bank was looking to the future and that it had the wealth to have the most up and coming architecture along with it.

Renderings

Below are some renderings I made, followed by the set photos for comparison. We used the renderings throughout the entire building process to help all department understand what we were looking to achieve. They also help to plan shots, determine lighting patterns and decide on material finishes.

Drawings

As the main set designer for this set, I detailed every inch of the space. We wanted every element to align with another therefore we built everything from the conference room table, to the reception desk, to how the metal would wrap around our curtain walls dividers. With over 40 architectural drawings, every line was meticulously thought through and our construction and paint department did a wonderful job adhering to every detail.
